App Review: Makeup Genius by L'Oreal Paris

So my sister introduced me to a new app last week and WOW... it's AWESOME.

Move over traditional virtual makeup editing programs! L'Oreal USA has recently released a better and innovative virtual makeover app for the iPhone and iPad called Makeup Genius.

You may ask "what is so innovative about this app?"

Other virtual makeover programs require you to take a picture of yourself and then make you try on unrealistic-looking makeup on your face. Well, the Makeup Genius app is opposite of that.

The Makeup Genius app allows you to move your face while you're wearing the makeup!! So cool! The makeup looks so real, too!! You can smile, close your eyes, make silly faces to the camera, whatever...It's like looking at a virtual mirror of yourself.

Basically the app scans your face and then gives you a selection of products and looks to try on. Once you try on the makeup, MAGIC mstarts to happen.

INSTALLATION PROCESS = EASY

First, the app scanned my face. The scanning of the face part was very easy. I didn't have to connect the dots to trace areas of my face. It automatically detected my face. I also didn't have to register an account or anything like that. Next, I chose the "tap here to try on ready-to-wear looks" option. Then, I was given a selection of looks to choose from. Finally, it led me to the main screen once I chose a look to try on.

PROS:
The app has a variety of makeup products. It includes eyeshadows, lipsticks, blush, eyeliners, gloss, and lip liners. Here are some of the products:

Some products offer more than one color.

It includes intriguing ready-to-wear looks. My favorite look is the Winged-out look. Here are some of the looks:

Very bright lighting:

Neutral lighting:

The app even allows you to scan a L'Oreal makeup product or ad!

This option enables the app to automatically detect the product and put it onto your face. The scanning option is good to use when you're at a store looking at L'Oreal makeup because you obviously can't try on the makeup in real at the store lol.

There's a shopping list option. Thanks to this I was able to know how much each product cost.

There are also how to videos. They show some tips on how to do the smokey eye look, the winged eye look, and more!

And the app is FREE!!!~*~*~*

CONS and other comments: This app only has L'Oreal products. I wish Makeup Genius included products from other beauty brands, but I guess it makes sense to have only L'Oreal products since it's from that company.  I wish it had false eyelashes too, but I don't think the company makes those. I also wish that the app included foundation products (maybe it will have that feature in the future). It takes a little time to find the right lighting. It works best in kind of bright/neutral lighting.

I will be honest, I had a small dilemma with the scanning option. I tested two of my L'Oreal lipsticks. Both were the Colour Riche Extraordinaire, but in two different colors. One had a slightly damaged barcode label and the other one did not. The scan didn't work on the one that had a slightly damaged barcode label. So at first, I thought that the scan didn't work because of the damaged label. However, I later found out that the app DIDN'T HAVE THAT LIPSTICK COLOR. (I thought all colors were in the app. Grr.) Maybe the color was discontinued?? I don't know.

Annnyyywayssss...
I have a feeling that other beauty brands will soon start to follow this new innovation (or maybe they are already following). Soon their might be similar makeup apps from MAC, NARS, AVON, etc. Think of all the possibilities that this app might inspire in the future. Who knows, maybe in the future I will be able to see myself in different clothes and hairstyles through a "virtual magic mirror".

Have fun! <3
