30 Happy Days Challenge: Day 9

Day 9: your favorite flower.

CHERRY BLOSSOM FLOWER.

LOOKS SO BEAUTIFUL AND MAGICAL!

Some information I found about cherry blossom trees:

The cherry blossom tree is truly a wonderful sight to see when it's in full bloom around spring time. There are many types of cherry blossom trees. Most of them grow flowers only, but some of them grow cherries, too. The flowers range in colors from pinkish to whiteish hues.

In Japan, it's more than just a beautiful tree. There are over one million cherry blossom trees throughout the country. Each spring, people come to look at the flowers and spend quality time with friends and family. They have many festivals in honor of the cherry blossom tree.

So why is it so significant in Japan?

It symbolizes the circle of life (death and rebirth, new life, reproduction).

Nature is lifeless and cold during winter. Once the tree blooms in early spring, it blooms in full force for a short time period. It serves as a reminder to some people that life is precious and beautiful.

Hundreds of years ago, the cherry blossom tree was used as a guide for rice-planting. Farmers needed to know when to plant rice so they kept on checking the cherry trees. When the cherries started to bloom, that meant it was time to plant rice seeds. When the flowers and cherries started to fall, that meant it was time to move the seeds into paddies.

I think that because of this technique some farmers got enough food to survive the whole year. This successful technique was probably passed from generation to generation and kind of stayed as a value of Japan.

The cherry blossom tree is also significant for soldiers. Samurais do not exist anymore, but when they did, they used cherry blossoms in sacrificial rituals. A fallen cherry blossom represented the short life of  the samurai. During World War 2, fallen blossoms were identified with the kamikaze pilots.

I have never seen cherry blossom trees in real life. Hopefully, some day I will be able to see them.

What's your favorite flower?
